Safety

Electrical and mechanical safety of motors, operators and the doors, gates and shading they drive.

  • US safety standard for operators and systems that move doors, draperies, gates, louvers and windows. For garage door and gate operators it sets entrapment-protection requirements, including how the operator must react to an obstruction and which external monitored sensors are accepted. US federal rule 16 CFR 1211 relies on it for residential garage door operators. Relevant to: door, gate and window operator makers selling in the US and Canada, usually certified by a nationally recognised testing laboratory. Regions: United States, Canada · Applies to: Door and gate operators, Door & gate operators We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • We have not written a scope summary for this standard yet. Regions: United States · Applies to: Shading motors (blinds, shutters, awnings) We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • ASTM specification for the construction of automated vehicular gates: gate design features that reduce entrapment and impact risks when the gate is driven by an operator. It is normally used together with UL 325 for the operator. Relevant to: gate fabricators, installers and gate operator makers in the US. We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • The British publication of the European adoption of IEC 60335-2-97, the safety part for drives of rolling shutters, awnings, blinds and similar equipment. The European version adds common modifications; the A11 amendment carries European-only changes. Read with EN 60335-1. Relevant to: shading motor makers selling in the EU and Great Britain, where this text is the usual basis for electrical-safety conformity. We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • European standard for safety in use of power-operated industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates. It sets requirements and test methods for hazards such as crushing, shearing and impact, including limits on forces at the closing edge and the use of safety devices. The 2017 edition also absorbed the test methods that were previously in EN 12445. Relevant to: door and gate makers and installers in Europe, as the usual basis for the safety assessment of the complete installation. Regions: European Union, European Economic Area · Applies to: Shading motors (blinds, shutters, awnings), Door and gate operators, Door & gate operators 94 products declared by the manufacturer
  • European product standard for internal blinds (such as roller, pleated and venetian blinds used indoors). It sets performance requirements and safety requirements, and its A1 amendment brought in requirements on protecting young children from strangulation by cords, chains and loops. The related test methods and safety-device requirements are in EN 16433 and EN 16434. Relevant to: makers and importers of internal blinds, manual or motorised, in Europe. Applies to: Tubular motors We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • European standard giving the test methods used to check internal blinds against strangulation hazards for young children, for example measuring accessible cord and loop lengths and the behaviour of cords under load. It supports the requirements set out in EN 13120. Relevant to: internal blind makers, test labs and importers in Europe, including for motorised blinds that keep any cord or chain. We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • European standard with requirements and test methods for child-safety devices fitted to internal blinds, such as tensioning devices and breakaway connectors that prevent hazardous loops. It is used alongside EN 13120 and EN 16433. Relevant to: internal blind makers and component suppliers in Europe. We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • The IEC household-appliance safety part for drives of gates, doors and windows, read with IEC 60335-1. It covers the electrical and mechanical safety of the drive unit; it does not cover drives meant only for commercial or industrial use by trained staff. Safety in use of the complete door or gate, such as force limits at the closing edge, is dealt with in separate product standards. Relevant to: gate, door and window operator makers worldwide. Regions: IT, Worldwide, DE, FR, European Union, European Economic Area · Applies to: Door & gate operators We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • The IEC household-appliance safety part for drives of vertically moving garage doors in homes, read with IEC 60335-1. It addresses the drive itself: electrical safety, construction and protection against hazards arising from the drive's movement. The behaviour of the complete installed door is assessed against door standards as well. Relevant to: residential garage door operator makers selling in markets that adopt IEC 60335 parts. Applies to: Door & gate operators We are collecting certificates for this standard.
  • The IEC part of the household appliance safety series that deals with electric drives for rolling shutters, awnings, blinds and similar window coverings. It is read together with the general part, IEC 60335-1, and adds hazards specific to these drives, such as unexpected movement, end-limit behaviour and the drive's electrical and mechanical construction. Relevant to: tubular and other shading motor makers worldwide; national and European adoptions (EN IEC 60335-2-97) are the versions used for market access. The current IEC text is edition 4.0 (2023). Regions: European Union, European Economic Area, IT, Worldwide, DE, FR · Applies to: Shading motors (blinds, shutters, awnings), Door and gate operators, Tubular motors We are collecting certificates for this standard.

Market access and product standards

Product standards and documentation rules a manufacturer relies on to place a product on a market.

  • European product standard for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates. It lists performance characteristics, such as resistance to wind load, thermal properties and safe opening, and is a harmonised standard under the EU Construction Products Regulation, so doors in its scope carry CE marking with a declaration of performance. Relevant to: door and gate manufacturers and installers in Europe; power-operated doors also need the machinery and electrical rules. Applies to: Door & gate operators We are collecting certificates for this standard.

Performance

How performance (wind load, endurance, noise, energy) is tested and declared.

  • American National Standard published by DASMA with specifications for sectional overhead-type doors: construction, materials and the performance information a manufacturer is expected to state.
