Placing door and gate operators on the Great Britain market

In Great Britain, power-operated doors and gates are machinery under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with safety in use assessed against BS EN 12453. Drives, control boards and remotes also fall under the electrical safety, EMC and radio equipment regulations, and connectable consumer products under the UK product security regime. The UK government currently recognises the CE marking for many of these products alongside UKCA; check the GOV.UK position for your product. Northern Ireland follows EU rules. The installer of the complete door or gate carries out the final conformity steps.

Checklist

  1. Choose the marking route for Great Britain and Northern Ireland

    Mandatory

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Evidence
Record the route per product family (UKCA, CE under continued recognition, or both) and the EU route for Northern Ireland, plus the UK importer details. If you rely on CE recognition, keep the EU declaration and check that the EU and GB rules you rely on still match for your product.

  2. Classify the operator under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008

    Mandatory · Manufacturer self-declaration

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Evidence
Decide whether you supply a complete machine or partly completed machinery (operator kit). A kit comes with a declaration of incorporation and assembly instructions; the installer of the complete door or gate issues the final declaration and marking.

  3. Meet the safety-in-use requirements of BS EN 12453

    Mandatory · Manufacturer self-declaration

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Standards
    EN 12453 2017+A1:2021, EN 13241 2003+A2:2016
    Evidence
Risk assessment and test records for force limitation, safety edges, photo eyes, speeds and manual release; BS EN 13241 when you supply the complete door. Safety devices must never be bridged or disabled; force measurement on site is done by trained installers.

  4. Assess electrical safety of the drive

    Mandatory · Manufacturer self-declaration

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Standards
    IEC 60335-2-95 2023, IEC 60335-2-103 2023
    Evidence
Test report against BS EN 60335-1 with BS EN 60335-2-95 (residential garage door drives) or BS EN 60335-2-103 (gates, doors and windows). Mains connection by a qualified electrician following BS 7671.

  5. Show electromagnetic compatibility

Conditional · when for products without a radio function · Manufacturer self-declaration

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Evidence
EMC test report under the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016 for drives, boards and accessories without radio.

  6. Meet the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017

Conditional · when with a built-in radio receiver or transmitter (motor, remote control, hub or plug-in module) · Self-declaration, notified body optional

    Regulation
UKCA marking (Great Britain) (SI 2017/1206; SI 2016/1091; SI 2016/1101; SI 2008/1597)
    Evidence
Radio, EMC and safety evidence for the radio product against designated standards (in practice the same EN standards used in the EU). Where designated standards are not fully applied, a UK approved body (or, while CE is recognised, an EU notified body for CE-marked goods) is involved.

  7. Meet the UK product security regime for connectable products

Conditional · when if the product is a consumer product that can connect to the internet or a network (app, hub or Wi-Fi control) · Manufacturer self-declaration

    Evidence
