EU directive
Low Voltage Directive
What it covers
The LVD covers the electrical safety of mains-powered equipment, such as 230 V tubular motors and door operators. Its core obligation is that the equipment is safe to install, maintain and use as intended; applying the harmonised standards gives a presumption that it is. For household shading drives the safety standard usually applied is the EN 60335-2-97 series together with EN 60335-1. Radio products meet the same safety objectives through the RED. Conformity is by the manufacturer's own assessment, then the EU declaration of conformity and the CE marking.

Certification programs
- CE marking The manufacturer states, in an EU Declaration of Conformity, that the product meets the EU legislation that applies to it. For motorised shading drives this is typically the Low Voltage Directive and the EMC Directive, or the Radio Equipment Directive when the product contains a radio. Under the Low Voltage and EMC Directives the manufacturer can carry out the conformity assessment itself; under the Radio Equipment Directive this is allowed only when the relevant harmonised standards are applied in full, otherwise a notified body must be involved. CE marking is therefore a manufacturer declaration, not an independent certificate, and the mark alone does not say which standards were applied (the Declaration of Conformity lists them).
